# You need to see these 9 AI animated films that are breaking new ground

These AI-animated shorts showcase incredible talent and creativity from a global community of storytellers. The world’s first AI animation competition, hosted by Curious Refuge with Promise Studios and Luma Labs, attracted over 700 entries!

## What makes a great AI-animated film?

The competition’s impressive judging panel, including filmmaker Rob Minkoff and other industry leaders, looked for films where:

* The AI doesn’t get in the way of storytelling
* Characters connect emotionally with viewers
* The technology enhances rather than distracts
* The animation maintains consistent style and tone
* The sound design complements the visuals

## The standout finalists

### “Late” by Hal Wattmo (First Place Winner)

This powerful story follows a man who’s running late for a date when a stranger shares a heartbreaking tale of missed opportunities with his dancer wife. The film uses a combination of animation styles, including comic book panels, to tell a poignant story about appreciating loved ones before it’s too late.

“The story was fantastic, the message was excellent, and they just nailed it,” noted one judge.

### “Graveyard” by Danny Singh (Second Place)

This anime-inspired film impressed judges with its visually stunning moments and clear narrative. It boldly merged multiple animation styles – something that AI uniquely enables creators to do quickly – while still telling a compelling story in under five minutes.

### “A Million Trillion Pathways” by Roki (Third Place)

Technically impressive, this anime-style short features incredible scene composition and world-building that creates memorable settings. Judges praised its cohesive style and detailed environments, from a character’s home to underground settings.

### Other finalists that amazed the judges:

**”Cursed Cat” by Marcus Lochin** – A visually unique film about a talking cat and a mysterious curse. The judges were captivated by its distinctive style and wanted to see more of this world.

**”Imaginary Love” by Maya Cohen** – A charming romcom that tells its story through character physicality rather than dialogue – an impressive feat with AI animation.

**”Play” by Dorothy Pang** – A reminder
