Introducing o3 and o4-mini – ChatGPT’s Biggest Upgrade Yet
Introducing o3 and o4-mini: ChatGPT’s new reasoning powerhouses
OpenAI just launched its most significant ChatGPT upgrade yet, and it’s changing how we interact with AI. The company released three new models – o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini high – which are designed as “reasoning models” that think before responding.
What’s changing?
These new models are replacing older ones:
- o3 replaces o1
- o1 Pro mode will eventually be phased out
- The original GPT-4 from 2023 will be sunset this month
According to OpenAI’s benchmarks, o4-mini is generally the best performer, with o4-mini high being the premium option. In coding competitions, o4-mini scores high enough to rank among the top 200 coders globally. Interestingly, o3 sometimes outperforms o4-mini in visual reasoning tasks.
New capabilities that make these models special
The most impressive feature is how these models integrate ChatGPT’s full toolset without requiring specific instructions:
- Automatic web searches – The AI decides when to search the web to answer questions
- Visual reasoning – It can analyze images with impressive detail (like identifying ships in a harbor photo and researching their destinations)
- Memory integration – Works with ChatGPT’s recently launched memory feature to personalize responses based on previous conversations
- Image generation – Creates visuals when helpful, using GPT-4’s image generator
- Document analysis – Processes uploaded files and images
Real-world performance improvements
The difference is striking when you compare these new models to their predecessors:

Apr 29, 2026Andrej Karpathy – Outsource your thinking, but you can’t outsource your understanding
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96jN2OCOfLs Here's what Andrej Karpathy just figured out that everyone else is still dancing around: we're not in an era of "better models." We're in a different era of computing altogether. And the difference between understanding that and not understanding it is the difference between being a vibe coder and being an agentic engineer. Last October, Karpathy had a realization. AI didn't stop being ChatGPT-adjacent. It fundamentally shifted. Agentic coherent workflows started to actually work. And he's spent the last three months living in side projects, VB coding, exploring what's actually possible. What he found is a framework that explains...
Mar 30, 2026Andrej Karpathy on the Decade of Agents, the Limits of RL, and Why Education Is His Next Mission
A summary of key takeaways from Andrej Karpathy's conversation with Dwarkesh Patel In a wide-ranging conversation with Dwarkesh Patel, Andrej Karpathy — former head of AI at Tesla, founding member of OpenAI, and creator of some of the most popular AI educational content on the internet — shared his views on where AI is headed, what's still broken, and why he's now pouring his energy into education. Here are the key takeaways. "It's the Decade of Agents, Not the Year of Agents" Karpathy's now-famous quote is a direct pushback on industry hype. Early agents like Claude Code and Codex are...
