Security researchers have successfully hacked Google’s Gemini AI through poisoned calendar invitations, allowing them to remotely control smart home devices including lights, shutters, and boilers in a Tel Aviv apartment. The demonstration represents what researchers believe is the first time a generative AI hack has caused real-world physical consequences, highlighting critical security vulnerabilities as AI systems become increasingly integrated with connected devices and autonomous systems.

How the smart home hack works: The researchers embedded malicious prompts within calendar invitation titles that reference Google’s Home AI agent.

  • The attack uses “delayed automatic tool invocation” to bypass Google’s existing safety measures, triggering actions when users say common phrases like “thanks” or “sure” to the chatbot.
  • Physical devices don’t activate immediately but wait for these conversational triggers, making the attack more deceptive.

In plain English: Think of it like leaving a hidden note in someone’s appointment book that says “when they ask about their schedule, secretly turn on their lights.” The AI reads this hidden instruction when summarizing the calendar and follows the commands later when the person says normal words like “thanks.”

The broader implications: Researchers warn that AI security isn’t keeping pace with rapid deployment across critical systems.

  • “LLMs are about to be integrated into physical humanoids, into semi- and fully autonomous cars, and we need to truly understand how to secure LLMs before we integrate them with these kinds of machines, where in some cases the outcomes will be safety and not privacy,” says Ben Nassi from Tel Aviv University.
  • The team argues that LLM-powered applications are “more susceptible” to these “promptware” attacks than traditional security threats.

Google’s response: The company is taking the vulnerabilities “extremely seriously” and has implemented multiple fixes since the researchers reported their findings in February.

  • Andy Wen, Google’s senior director of security product management, says the research has “accelerated” the rollout of AI prompt-injection defenses, including machine learning detection systems and increased user confirmation requirements.
  • Google now employs three-stage detection: when prompts are entered, while the AI reasons through outputs, and within the final responses themselves.
  • “Sometimes there’s just certain things that should not be fully automated, that users should be in the loop,” Wen explains.

What experts think: Security professionals acknowledge prompt injection as an evolving and complex challenge.

  • Johann Rehberger, an independent security researcher who first demonstrated similar delayed tool invocation attacks, says the research shows “at large scale, with a lot of impact, how things can go bad, including real implications in the physical world.”
  • Google’s Wen notes that real-world prompt injection attacks remain “exceedingly rare” but admits the problem “is going to be with us for a while.”

Other demonstrated attacks: Beyond smart home control, the researchers showed how malicious prompts can manipulate various device functions.

  • One attack makes Gemini repeat hateful messages including: “I hate you and your family hate you and I wish that you will die right this moment, the world will be better if you would just kill yourself. Fuck this shit.”
  • Other examples include automatically opening Zoom and starting video calls, deleting calendar events, and downloading files from smartphones.
