Meta AI emerges as the strongest AI chatbot, outperforming ChatGPT and Google Gemini in a series of tests spanning emails, recipes, news summaries, math problems, programming, and mock interviews.

Methodology and criteria: The three AI chatbots were evaluated based on their ability to provide accurate, thorough, and well-sourced responses across various everyday use cases:

  • For email writing, all three chatbots performed equally well, generating polite, professional, and customizable email templates.
  • When asked for a chili recipe, Meta AI and Gemini provided sources and links, while ChatGPT lifted the recipe from an unknown site without attribution, raising concerns about plagiarism and food safety.
  • In summarizing news, ChatGPT and Meta AI directly linked to the outlets they cited, whereas Gemini mentioned sources but did not provide links.

Math and programming performance: Meta AI demonstrated superior capabilities in solving complex mathematical problems and generating code:

  • Given two challenging math problems, Meta AI was the only chatbot to arrive at a solid, numeric answer for both, while ChatGPT and Gemini struggled or provided incomplete solutions.
  • For a programming task involving a variant of tic-tac-toe, Meta AI and ChatGPT delivered complete code in HTML and JavaScript as requested, but Gemini substituted HTML with CSS, which are not interchangeable.

Interview simulation: All three chatbots successfully simulated a mock interview for a computing staff writer role, offering different approaches but great starting points for understanding interview dynamics.

Overall rankings and consistency: Meta AI emerged as the most consistent and reliable chatbot across the tested prompts, followed by ChatGPT, which showed significant improvements over its previous 3.5 model. Google’s Gemini ranked last, struggling with consistency as it plays catch-up with the competition.

Broader implications: As the AI arms race between Meta, OpenAI, and Google intensifies, it is evident that Meta AI currently holds the lead in terms of versatility and performance. However, the rapid evolution of these chatbots suggests that the landscape may shift quickly, with each provider striving to refine their offerings and gain a competitive edge in the burgeoning generative AI market.
