Instagram has introduced AI-powered editing tools that allow users to modify their Stories directly within the app using Meta AI prompts. The new features enable users to remove unwanted elements, add AI-generated content, and apply preset styles to photos and videos, making advanced photo editing more accessible to Instagram’s massive user base.

What you should know: The AI editing tools are accessible through the Restyle menu, represented by a small brush icon in the top right when uploading an image to Instagram Stories.

  • Users can prompt Meta AI to make specific changes by focusing on five key elements: subject, lighting and mood, composition, style, or location.
  • An example from Meta shows someone being transformed into a dinosaur outfit with a UFO abduction scene added to the background.

Key features: The update includes several editing capabilities that mirror advanced photo editing tools found in professional software.

  • Remove function: Works similarly to Google’s Magic Eraser tool, allowing users to eliminate unwanted elements with prompts like “Remove these people” or “Remove the car.”
  • Add or Change features: Enable AI-generated additions such as changing hair color or adding celebratory elements like balloons to birthday photos.
  • Preset styles: Include options like Sketch, 8-bit, Pink, Manga, Illustrated, Watercolor, and Anime that function similarly to Instagram filters.

The big picture: While these AI capabilities aren’t new for Meta AI, this marks the first time they’ve been easily accessible within the Instagram app itself, eliminating the need to use external tools or separate applications.

What to expect: The rollout is happening gradually, with users receiving the update over the coming days, and Meta anticipates seeing significantly more AI-generated Instagram Stories as users experiment with the new prompts and preset options.
