The iconic hot pink Motorola Razr is back, now with AI capabilities and a larger external screen, as the company celebrates the 20th anniversary of the original Razr flip phone.

New Razr models and design: Motorola has launched two new folding flip phones – the Razr and Razr+ – with the latter featuring the return of the iconic Hot Pink color:

  • The Razr+ has a 4-inch external screen (17% larger than last year’s model), while the Razr gets a 3.6-inch screen (2.5 times larger than its predecessor).
  • Both phones have a mix of vegan leather and suede designs in various colors, with the Razr+ available in Midnight Blue, Spring Green, Hot Pink, and Peach Fuzz, and the Razr in Koala Grey, Beach Sand, and Spritz Orange.
  • The hinge is 30% smaller, offering better dust protection and durability, and the phones have an IPX8 water resistance rating.

Improved displays and performance: The new Razr models feature upgraded internal and external displays, along with enhanced performance:

  • The internal display is a 6.9-inch pOLED panel with a 165-Hz refresh rate on the Razr+ and 120-Hz on the Razr, both using LTPO technology for battery efficiency.
  • The Razr+ is powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor and 12 GB of RAM, while the Razr uses the MediaTek Dimensity 7300X and 8 GB of RAM.
  • Both models have 256 GB of storage, with the Razr+ featuring a 4,000-mAh battery and 45-watt charging, and the Razr equipped with a 4,200-mAh battery and 30-watt charging.

Camera upgrades and AI features: Motorola has enhanced the camera capabilities and introduced AI-powered features in the new Razr phones:

  • Both devices have a 50-MP primary camera with optical image stabilization, but the Razr+ features a 2X optical zoom telephoto as its second camera, while the Razr sticks with a 13-MP ultrawide.
  • The Razr+ exclusive “Photo Enhancement Engine” uses AI to improve image details, dynamic range, bokeh, and noise reduction.
  • Users can access Google’s Gemini chatbot app from the external display and get three months of the Google One AI Premium Plan for free.
  • Motorola’s upcoming “Moto AI” will offer features like notification summarization, instant recording and transcription, and the ability to save and recall on-screen information.

Pricing, availability, and accessories: The Razr and Razr+ will be available for preorder on July 10, with official sales starting on July 24:

  • The Razr is priced at $700, while the Razr+ costs $1,000.
  • Motorola is also launching the Moto Tag, an AirTags-like accessory that supports Bluetooth LE and ultra-wideband tech to help locate lost devices, compatible with any Android phone.

Analyzing deeper: While the new Razr models bring notable improvements and the nostalgia factor with the return of the hot pink color, Motorola’s software update policy remains a concern, as these phones will only receive three Android OS updates and four years of security updates. This falls short compared to the seven years of software support offered by competitors like Google and Samsung on their flagship devices. As folding flip phones continue to gain popularity, it will be crucial for Motorola to address this issue to maintain its competitive edge in the market.
