An AI-powered film, television, and gaming studio emerges at the intersection of Hollywood’s traditional production model and artificial intelligence innovation. Staircase Studios AI, founded by “Divergent” franchise producer Pouya Shahbazian, aims to disrupt entertainment production by leveraging AI workflows to create content more efficiently, backed by notable media investors and targeting projects with budgets under $500,000.

The big picture: Staircase Studios AI plans to produce more than 30 projects in the next 3-4 years using AI-driven production methods.

  • The venture is backed by influential media figures including Kenneth Lerer, co-founder of The Huffington Post, and Aryeh Bourkoff, CEO of Liontree.
  • “Transformers” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura serves as an advisor to the studio.

Key projects in development: The studio has launched with two flagship productions showcasing its AI-integrated approach.

  • “The Woman with Red Hair,” currently in production, features talent including Maya-Nika Bewley and character designs by Pixar veteran Teddy Newton.
  • “Every Living Creature,” an animated thriller directed by Emmy winner Bernie Su, adapts a Truly Adventurous article about animal rescue during a volcanic eruption.

Technology integration: Staircase Studios is developing proprietary AI solutions while forming strategic partnerships.

  • The studio is creating ForwardMotion, its own AI workflow system.
  • A partnership with AI gaming tech company Mother Games suggests expansion beyond traditional media formats.

What they’re saying: The studio’s leadership emphasizes the need to revolutionize traditional production methods.

  • “After packaging and selling 150 projects into the studio system over the past 15 years, I’ve borne witness to far too much inefficiency to continue the status quo,” said Shahbazian.
  • “AI is inevitable across all industries, and it’s crystal clear what’s ahead for movies, television, and gaming,” noted Kenneth Lerer.

Project pipeline: The studio has acquired several properties for development.

  • Acquired intellectual property includes Patrick Lee’s novel “Wild Night” and projects like “Between The Dog & The Wolf” and “Fully Wrecked.”
  • An untitled procedural series and adaptation of “I Hate You Kelly Donahue” are also in development.
