Adobe introduces new generative AI features to Illustrator and Photoshop, aiming to streamline creative workflows and empower professionals.
Key updates in Illustrator: Adobe’s latest Firefly Vector AI model powers several new features in Illustrator, now available in public beta:
- Generative Shape Fill allows users to add detailed, AI-generated vectors to shapes using text prompts.
- The Text to Pattern beta feature has been improved, enabling the creation of scalable, customized vector patterns for various applications like wallpapers.
- Style Reference generates outputs that mimic existing styles, helping designers maintain consistency.
Additional Illustrator enhancements: Beyond generative AI, this update brings other tools to streamline design tasks:
- The Dimension tool automatically adds sizing information to projects.
- The Mockup feature provides previews of how designs look on 3D products.
- Retype converts static text in images into editable text.
Photoshop improvements: Adobe’s flagship image editing software also receives updates:
- The Generate Image feature, powered by the Firefly Image 3 Model, is now generally available in both desktop and web apps.
- Enhance Detail for Generative Fill provides improved sharpness and detail when applied to large images.
- The Selection Brush tool, now generally available, simplifies the process of selecting and separating specific objects from the canvas.
Adobe’s ongoing generative AI journey: This release marks the latest in a series of generative AI rollouts for Adobe since introducing its first Firefly model last year:
- Despite insisting that its Firefly models are ethically trained on licensed content from Adobe Stock, the company faced backlash over a recent policy update.
- Adobe clarified that customer projects won’t be used as AI training material following the controversy.
- Some creative professionals have expressed concerns that generative AI features automating design work could reduce job opportunities for human artists.
Balancing AI and human creativity: Adobe maintains that its goal is to empower creative professionals, not replace them:
- Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe Creative Cloud’s VP of product marketing, states that the company believes “every massive technology shift offers opportunities to deliver new products and innovations.”
- Adobe aims to harness the power of generative AI to amplify human creativity and expression rather than diminish the role of human artists and designers.
