YouTube has launched an AI-powered “likeness detection” tool that allows creators in its Partner Program to identify and report unauthorized deepfakes featuring their faces. The technology addresses growing concerns about AI-generated content impersonating popular creators, offering a scalable solution for managing synthetic media across the platform.

How it works: The detection system flags potentially AI-generated videos featuring a creator’s likeness, which they can then review and request for removal.

  • Creators verify their identity and access flagged content through the Content Detection tab in YouTube Studio.
  • The tool operates similarly to Content ID, YouTube’s existing system for detecting copyrighted audio and video content.
  • YouTube warns that the current version “may display videos featuring your actual face, not altered or synthetic versions,” including clips of creators’ own legitimate content.

The rollout: YouTube began notifying eligible creators via email today, with broader access planned over the coming months.

  • The feature initially launched through a pilot program in December with talent represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), a major talent agency.
  • YouTube’s original announcement described the collaboration as giving “several of the world’s most influential figures” access to technology designed to “identify and manage AI-generated content that features their likeness, including their face, on YouTube at scale.”

Broader AI content policies: This detection tool represents part of YouTube’s comprehensive approach to managing synthetic media on its platform.

  • Since March, YouTube has required creators to label uploads containing AI-generated or altered content.
  • The platform maintains strict policies around AI-generated music that mimics artists’ unique vocal styles.
  • These measures come as YouTube and parent company Google simultaneously develop their own AI video generation and editing tools.

Why this matters: The likeness detection feature tackles a growing challenge as AI-generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated and accessible, potentially helping creators protect their digital identity while maintaining platform integrity at scale.
