Instead, the focus must shift toward understanding the systems and incentives behind information distribution. Social media algorithms are designed to maximize user engagement to display more advertisements, which means controversial or emotionally charged content—regardless of its truthfulness—often receives wider distribution than factual but mundane information.
This dynamic became starkly apparent during Hurricane Helene’s devastation of Florida in September 2024, when disinformation spreaders garnered tens of millions of views on X while fact-checkers and accurate news sources reached only thousands of people. “Students need to know that a lot of these platforms are not designed to spread truth,” Shukla emphasizes.
The economics of false information
Understanding who creates and spreads false information—and why—provides crucial context for evaluation. Dr. Jen Golbeck, a professor at the University of Maryland who specializes in social media research, identifies two primary motivations behind misinformation campaigns.
Some bad actors have clear political or ideological agendas, crafting false narratives to influence public opinion or policy decisions. However, others operate purely for financial gain, creating sensational or controversial content that generates advertising revenue through increased engagement, regardless of its accuracy.
This economic incentive structure means that profitable lies can spread faster and wider than less engaging truths, creating a fundamental challenge for anyone trying to stay accurately informed in digital environments.
A systematic approach to information verification
Rather than relying on increasingly unreliable technical detection methods, professionals need a more systematic approach to evaluating information credibility.
1. Analyze the source and motivation
Before accepting any information, consider who created it and what incentives they might have. “Think through the incentives that people might have to present something a certain way,” advises Sam Hiner, executive director of the Young People’s Alliance, a nonprofit focused on youth advocacy. “We need to understand what other people’s values are and that can be a source of trust.”
This analysis should extend beyond the immediate poster to consider the original source, any intermediaries, and the platforms amplifying the message.
2. Cross-reference with verified sources
Simple Google searches can be misleading, as AI-generated news operations sometimes flood the internet with multiple versions of the same false story. Instead, cross-check important information against established news organizations with professional editorial standards, official government sources, academic institutions, or industry-specific authoritative publications.
3. Understand platform mechanics
Recognize that social media algorithms prioritize engagement over accuracy. Content that provokes strong emotional reactions—whether positive or negative—receives more visibility than balanced, factual reporting. This understanding should inform how you weight information discovered through social media versus traditional news sources.
4. Evaluate community-driven fact-checking
Both X’s Community Notes and Meta’s crowdsourced moderation systems allow users with different perspectives to collaborate on adding context to potentially misleading posts. While some experts view this approach as promising, others worry that these systems can be manipulated or may present false compromises between factual and false information.
“Because of these changes, young people might think that truth isn’t something that is objective but something you can argue and debate and settle on compromise in the middle,” Shukla warns. “That isn’t always the case.”
5. Seek offline perspective
Regular breaks from digital information consumption can provide crucial perspective. “Simply getting offline is one of the best ways to ensure we are thinking critically, rather than getting sucked into echo-chambers or inadvertently manipulated by algorithms,” Hiner suggests.
Additionally, deliberately seeking out people with different viewpoints in face-to-face conversations can help identify blind spots and challenge assumptions that online algorithms might reinforce.
Business implications and practical applications
For business professionals, the stakes of misinformation extend beyond personal embarrassment to potential financial losses, damaged partnerships, and compromised decision-making. Despite the challenges, some experts remain cautiously optimistic about society’s ability to adapt to this new information environment. “If anybody is equipped to handle this information integrity crisis, it’s young people,” Shukla believes. “If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that Gen Z is scrappy and resilient and can handle so much.”
However, this optimism must be paired with systematic approaches to information verification and a clear understanding of the economic and technological forces shaping our information landscape. As AI continues to advance, the ability to think critically about information sources and verification methods will become an increasingly valuable professional skill.
