Real-time voice chat technology is advancing rapidly, enabling natural-sounding AI conversations with minimal latency. This open-source project demonstrates how sophisticated speech recognition, large language models, and text-to-speech systems can be integrated to create fluid, interruptible voice interactions that mimic human conversation patterns, showcasing the potential for more intuitive human-AI interfaces.

Key features of this real-time AI voice chat system

1. End-to-end voice conversation architecture
The system creates a complete voice interaction loop by capturing user speech through the browser, processing it server-side, and returning AI-generated speech. This architecture prioritizes low latency and natural conversational flow above all else.

2. Real-time processing pipeline
The technology stack uses WebSockets to stream audio chunks directly from the browser to a Python backend where RealtimeSTT handles transcription, an LLM processes the text, and RealtimeTTS converts responses back to speech—all happening concurrently rather than sequentially.

3. Interruption handling capabilities
Unlike traditional voice interfaces that require users to wait until an AI finishes speaking, this system allows natural interruptions. The dynamic silence detection in turndetect.py adapts to conversation pace, creating a more authentic dialogue experience.

4. Modular AI components
The architecture supports multiple interchangeable AI systems through a pluggable design:

  • Language models: Default Ollama support with OpenAI integration options via llm_module.py
  • Text-to-speech engines: Multiple voice options including Kokoro, Coqui, and Orpheus through audio_module.py

5. Technical implementation details
The project uses a modern web development stack with FastAPI on the backend and vanilla JavaScript on the frontend. Audio processing leverages the Web Audio API and AudioWorklets for efficient handling of real-time audio streams.

6. Deployment flexibility
Docker and Docker Compose configurations simplify deployment and dependency management, with supporting documentation for specialized hardware acceleration through tools like the NVIDIA Container Toolkit.

7. Open-source accessibility
The entire project is available on GitHub, enabling developers to explore, modify and contribute to advancing conversational AI interfaces with the appropriate supporting libraries and frameworks.
