Several Bay Area crosswalk signals hacked with AI messages

# AI Pranks at Bay Area Crosswalks: Security Concerns or Harmless Fun?

This weekend, pedestrians in several Bay Area cities were greeted with an unexpected surprise when they pressed crosswalk buttons. Instead of the usual sounds, they heard AI-generated messages impersonating tech billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.

## What Happened?

Multiple crosswalk signals across Palo Alto, Redwood City, and Menlo Park were hacked to play AI-generated messages. One of the messages featured a fake Elon Musk saying:

> “Hi, this is Elon Musk, and I’d like to personally welcome you to Palo Alto, the home of Tesla Engineering. You know, they say money can’t buy happiness. And yeah, okay, I guess that’s true. God knows I’ve tried. But it can buy a Cybertruck. And that’s pretty sick, right?”

Another message impersonated Mark Zuckerberg:

> “Hi, this is Mark Zuckerberg. But real ones call me the Zuck… I just want to assure you, you don’t need to worry because there’s absolutely nothing you can do to stop it.”

## Public Reaction

Local resident Ren Sassy, who visited University Avenue in Palo Alto to verify if the viral social media videos were real, initially thought it might be a new advertising technique. After her amusement faded, she recognized it as a potential security concern.

However, she also noted, “I think it did add a layer of fun back to Palo Alto in a weird way, because it’s gotten quite stiff here.”

## Security Implications

Jeff Harp, a retired FBI agent, downplayed major security concerns, explaining that crosswalk systems aren’t particularly sophisticated. He suggested this incident would likely prompt cities to implement better security measures:

“What this will do is it will bring it to the attention of the people who are putting these devices on the streets… And they’ll say, hey, wait a minute, we do need to install some anti-sort of infiltration devices on them.”

Harp emphasized that while you can never prevent 100% of such hacks, it serves as a

Andrej Karpathy – Outsource your thinking, but you can’t outsource your understanding

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96jN2OCOfLs Here's what Andrej Karpathy just figured out that everyone else is still dancing around: we're not in an era of "better models." We're in a different era of computing altogether. And the difference between understanding that and not understanding it is the difference between being a vibe coder and being an agentic engineer. Last October, Karpathy had a realization. AI didn't stop being ChatGPT-adjacent. It fundamentally shifted. Agentic coherent workflows started to actually work. And he's spent the last three months living in side projects, VB coding, exploring what's actually possible. What he found is a framework that explains...

Andrej Karpathy on the Decade of Agents, the Limits of RL, and Why Education Is His Next Mission

A summary of key takeaways from Andrej Karpathy's conversation with Dwarkesh Patel In a wide-ranging conversation with Dwarkesh Patel, Andrej Karpathy — former head of AI at Tesla, founding member of OpenAI, and creator of some of the most popular AI educational content on the internet — shared his views on where AI is headed, what's still broken, and why he's now pouring his energy into education. Here are the key takeaways. "It's the Decade of Agents, Not the Year of Agents" Karpathy's now-famous quote is a direct pushback on industry hype. Early agents like Claude Code and Codex are...
