Innovative technology: The SeaCheck app, launched by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council, harnesses the power of real-time data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide up-to-date information about sea conditions:

  • Users can access current information about sea temperature, wind speed, and wave height for Boscombe Beach — so if you don’t live in the UK, you unfortunately can’t access it to understand local conditions, at least for now.
  • The app aims to help beachgoers make informed decisions before entering the water for swimming, paddling, or surfing.

Pilot program and future enhancements: The SeaCheck app is currently in a pilot phase until September, during which its effectiveness will be evaluated before a full roll-out:

  • Over time, the AI capabilities of the app will be expanded to indicate the presence of harmful bacteria in the water.
  • Two buoys positioned off Bournemouth and Boscombe piers will gather the necessary information to enable this feature.

Council’s perspective: Millie Earl, leader of BCP Council, emphasized the innovative nature of the app and its potential to provide valuable insights to the public:

  • “By leveraging AI and real-time data, we can provide unprecedented insights into sea conditions and water quality that is available to the public,” Earl stated.

Broader implications: The SeaCheck app demonstrates the growing trend of utilizing technology to enhance beach safety and visitor experiences:

  • As more local authorities adopt similar solutions, beachgoers can expect increased access to real-time information about sea conditions and water quality.
  • The integration of AI in such apps has the potential to provide even more sophisticated insights and predictions, further improving beach safety and enabling informed decision-making for visitors.
