There has been much talk of late about AI assistants that can act autonomously on behalf of users. Despite the potential of these “AI agents” to disrupt work and social environments, fundamental questions remain about their feasibility given liability issues and the transfer of agency from users to AI.

Key issues surrounding deployment: Two critical factors will impact the rollout of advanced AI assistants:

  • Liability concerns arise when AI agents act on behalf of users, raising questions about who is responsible for any harm or damage caused by the AI’s actions.
  • Effectively transferring agentic powers from users to AI assistants may prove challenging, as it requires carefully delineating the scope and limits of the AI’s authority to act autonomously.

Examining the hype around AI assistants: While tech giants are positioning AI assistants as the next big consumer technology, there is reason to for caution when taking the hype at face value:

  • Google DeepMind’s extensive report on the topic frames the key question as “what kind of AI assistants do we want to see in the world?”
  • However, the authors argue that a more fundamental question needs to be addressed first: whether AI assistants that act on users’ behalf are even feasible within current ethical and legal frameworks.

Broader implications for the future of AI: The challenges surrounding advanced AI assistants have significant implications for the trajectory of artificial intelligence:

  • If liability and agency issues cannot be satisfactorily resolved, it may significantly limit the scope and capabilities of future AI assistants and agents.
  • This could require rethinking some of the more ambitious visions put forth by tech companies and refocusing development efforts on AI systems that operate within clearer ethical and legal boundaries.

While advanced AI assistants hold immense disruptive potential, critical ethical and legal challenges must be thoughtfully addressed before they can be responsibly deployed at scale.
